The term treatment is the standard industry term for a written proposal. It is a narrative description of the production that a client or commissioning editor will read before deciding to develop this idea. In my treatment I will illustrate what I need to do, how I’m going to do it and why it is worth doing in the first place.
I intent to create a making a music video under the genre of synth-pop. I will create my video under the influence of directors such as Walter A. Stern and Anton Corbijn. I will then make a Digi-Pak and an advert for that Digi-Pak.
Working Title: The band we are using is Cinderella Score, an unsigned synth-pop band from Coventry. Being as I know one of the members in the band, it will be possible to include him in making the music video, with him lip-syncing the words in the video. The song title is ‘Heaven and Hell’, which may be changed due to what we want to get across to our audience and the plot of the video. Synopsis: The track is called ‘Heaven and Hell’ by Cinderella Score. Our idea is to have a simple and effective video, such as the work made by directors such as Walter A. Stern and Anton Corbijn. To do this we want to shoot our video on a long street using a tracking system used in such videos as ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’, with different shots added in such as POV shots and insert cuts of the walking feet and reaction shots of passers by. The video will relate to the music because the track is quite repetitive and this video is a metaphor for a man that takes the same journey everyday and is judging the people he walks past.
Format: We will be filming the video with a DSLR camera which our media tutor is providing us with. We will be editing the video on Apple Macs which will be accessible to us through college. The program we will use is Final Cut. For the advertisement and Digi-Pak we will use Photoshop and if Photoshop isn’t working for some reason we will use Microsoft Publisher.
Estimated Duration: The video will last roughly about four minutes and I am allowing three weeks to film and edit the video.
Intended Audience: After giving out questionnaires to the people I think would be interested in this video, I feel that the intended audience is viewers of music channels like MTV and NME. The first time it would be broadcast would be 9pm on a Saturday evening, being as a lot of people tune in to music channels in the morning to watch the charts. This is be ideal for the song because the genre is pop. The Digi-Pak would be released on a Monday, so it would have the time to get into the charts the Sunday of that week. The magazine advert would feature in a weekly publication such as NME.
Style: The style of the video is very simple and minimalistic This will be achieved by the mise-en-scene and the editing of the video. The song will be put over the film while editing so then we can edit around the song, for example have the model walking to the beat of the music. When filming, the song will be played through a speaker so the model can lip-sync to it.
Rationale: All the products we produce in this project are relevant because they are advertising a local band and this will give them more attention in the media not just locally and give them more of a fan-base. The video will interest the target audience because they could then link the video and the images from that video to the song.
Feasibility: Our video should be easy to make for we are able to provide costume ourselves and we have no problem obtaining the song. However we have to contact the police in the area we are shooting, to make them aware that we will be shooting in that area. This should be confirmed by 21st November. The advert and Digi-Pak are also feasible being as we both have access to Photoshop or other publishing software.
Budget: The budget for the video will be financed by me and my partner, Grace Howells, but it is unlikely we’ll need any money for making the video. This is because props and costumes will be provided by us and being as I know a member of the group we do not need to pay the artist for use of the song. The advert and Digi-Pak will be created through Photoshop which both of us have access to.
Deadlines: The deadline of completion of the whole product is January 20th.
